Korean winters can go as low as minus 10 degree celsius. Korea's ondol (home heating system) culture is as unique as it is effective in providing great warmth to Korean winters. It's based in an old belief of oriental medicine; keeping one's head cool while keeping the feet warm is good for one's health.

It goes without saying that the best food for Korean winters is tteokguk, Korean rice cake soup. Long strips of rice cake are dried, sliced and boiled to make tteokguk. The long rice cake symbolizes a long life. While the chewy rice cake is delicious in itself, the soup's hearty taste is also one of its better characteristics.

The broth is usually made with beef brisket, but it can also be prepared with vegetables or seafood. It all depends on a household's customs and tastes. Tteokguk is a dish that is shared warmly between family, friends and neighbors. It's a Korean cuisine tradition.

Experience the delicious warmth of Korean food.
